Penghu Archipelago Basalt

澎湖群島玄武岩

A：What is the geology of Penghu？

    澎湖群島是由什麼地質形成的？

B：Well, the islands of the Penghu archipelago are made from basalt and coral reefs.

    澎湖群島地質是由熔岩玄武岩地質及珊瑚礁形成的。

A：How many of the islands are made of veined stones?

    澎湖群島產文石的島嶼有幾個呢？

B：Well, there are Hsiyu-Hsiang, Wangan-Hsiang, Chiang-Chunao island

    Chishan island, Tingko island, Little-Baisha island, and a few others.

    包括西嶼鄉、望安鄉、將軍嶼、雞善嶼、錠鉤嶼、小白沙嶼及其它少數

    幾個島嶼。

A：The veined stone crafts are very special on Penghu and veined stones are found only in Penghu and Italy.

    文石工藝是澎湖很特別得東西，文石僅產於澎湖和義大利。

Penghu in Brief

介紹澎湖

A：Let me introduce Penghu to you. It consists of 64 islets and Islands. It sits just north of the Tropic of Cancer, and has an area of 127 square meters.  It is made up of volcanic lavas 40 km off the coastline of Taiwan.

    讓我來介紹澎湖，它是由六十四個小島所組成的，座落於北回歸線附近 ,面積有一百二十七平方公尺，她是火山岩漿所組成，距離台灣大約四 十公里。

B：Are all the shapes of the islands the same?

    全島都是由火山熔岩構成的嗎？。

A：All were formed earlier by basalt except Hua-Yu islet which was made by andesite.  Hua-Yu is the farthest west islet in Taiwan and has a nice lighthouse.

    除了花嶼是由安山岩所組成以外，其餘都是。花嶼是位於台灣最西方的 島嶼，島上還有座很漂亮的燈塔。

B：Is it a densely populated area?

    島上人口稠密嗎？

A：I don’t think so.  There is a beautiful elementary school, which has only twenty students.

    一點也不，那裡僅有間二十個學生的迷你型小學。

A：We have many local religions and folk culture activities in Penghu, for example: burning boats, releasing the Conming lanterns, celebrating Lantern Festival, and the goddess Matsu cruising her territory.

    我們有很多本地宗教、民俗文化，例如王船祭、放天燈、慶元宵及媽祖 祈福繞境等。

B：I understand.  Penghu has kept a few ancient ceremonies that are different from Taiwan.

    There is boat fishing, night fishing, seaweed harvesting, ocean farm touring, crabbing, mussel digging, squid fishing, and so on.

    當然可以，例如船釣、夜釣、採紫菜、遊覽海上牧場、抓螃蟹、挖生貝 , 釣小管等休閒漁業。

B：Wow!  There really are a lot of recreational fishery activities. If I have a chance, I’d like to try some of them.

A：Do you know Penghu Aquarium? It is such a nice place for the whole family for sightseeing.

B：Of course, I know, there is a great variety of marine creatures in Penghu.  The aquarium has a thirty-foot deep water tunnel and an outstanding diving performance.

    我當然知道，澎湖水族館有各式各樣的海底生物及魚類，還有條長三十 呎的水底隧道及精彩的餵魚秀。

A：I heard that the Penghu Aquarium is smaller than the Ping Tung Aquarium, and the visitors are getting fewer and fewer every year.

   我聽說澎湖水族館比屏東水族館規模小，而且每年參觀人數正逐年下降 中。

B：Exactly, I think it’s better for the Penghu Aquarium to expand their equipment as well as their areas, or reduce the price of the admission ticket.

   沒錯，澎湖水族館應該擴展其設備規模或降低票價是比較可行的方式。

A：Anyway, the aquarium is the best scenic spot for tourism at the moment, and an exhibition center for marine ecosystems.

Penghu Produce

澎湖的農作物

A：What on earth is the main produce in Penghu?

    澎湖到底有什麼主要的農作物呢？

B：The Penghu farm produce is limited, owing to small amounts of rainfall, a strong dry monsoon and salty soil.

    澎湖因為降雨量少，冬季季風強，土壤又含鹽份高，適合種植的農作 物不多。

    The produce of Penghu include low- economy peanuts, aloe, cactus, edged loofah, dew melon, water melon, corn, pumpkin, Shiang- Ru grass, and a few others.

     澎湖的農地只能種植花生、蘆薈、仙人掌、菱角絲瓜、哈密瓜、嘉寶瓜 、玉米、南瓜、香茹草等經濟價值較低的農作物。

     Penghu has three kinds of famous melons which are the edged loofah, dew melon, and watermelon.  Shiang- Ru grass can be served as herb tea that can help keep you from sweating in the sunshine, and Aloe Vera crops are a treatment for natural beauty.

     澎湖的菱角絲瓜、哈密瓜及嘉寶瓜是最著名的三大瓜果，其中香茹草可 煮成香茹茶，可清涼退火，蘆薈是天然的美容良藥。

 Though Penghu produces only a few crops, they still have economic value.

     澎湖農作物雖少，但都有經濟價值存在。

導　遊：Sure.  Makung Cheng Huang Temple and Wen-Au night markets 當然有，城隍廟夜市及文澳夜市。

旅　客：What Penghu foods are there? 那裡有什麼澎湖小吃？

導　遊：There are many traditional snacks there, including stinky tofu, roast sausage, B-B-Q, shaved ice, seafood hot pot, Chinese herb eggs and temperado, especially Penghu’s special meat balls.

市有各種傳統小吃，包括臭豆腐、香腸、碳烤、冰品、海鮮火 鍋、藥膳蛋、黑輪等，特別是澎湖清蒸肉丸。

旅　客：Are the Penghu meat balls different from Taiwan’s? 清蒸肉丸和台灣肉丸不一樣嗎？

導　遊：Oh, yes, they’re completely different.   Penghu meatballs are more delicate whereas Taiwan meatballs are greasy and oily. 完全相反，澎湖肉丸較清淡，臺灣肉丸則太油膩。

導　遊：Actually, you don’t need to wait until sunset, the vendor stalls open between 4～5 o’clock.

B：Mao Yu is the best place! It was classified as a reserve for sea birds. And Hsingjen Reservoir, Chongguang, Hsiwei and Qingluo are also good for bird watching.  Besides this, Jishan Yu, Dinggou Yu and Tiezhan Yu are suitable for bird watching on boats.

   貓嶼是最好的地點！它已經被劃為海鳥的保護區，還有興仁水庫、重光 、西衛及青螺也是不錯的賞鳥地點。此外，雞善嶼、錠鉤嶼及鐵砧嶼則 適合在船上賞鳥。

   I heard that some farms are open for tourists to visit, and some are even open for participating, but we need to pay for it.

B：Sure, I’d love to.  One ticket is $600, but you’ll pay extra for each piece of equipment you want to use.  For example, the rent for diving gear is $500.  Including the ferry fare, that’ll be $1200.  But we also offer a set of tickets that is $1500, which includes the ferry ticket and rent for diving gear, banana-boat, dragging-boat and jet ski.  There’s no limit on times, and there will be a ferry to take you to the next spot every 30 minutes.  Here is the timetable.
